Killer Skirt, Deadly Legs: A Mini Moment with McCall 7438

Happy Monday everyone! I hope everyone had a lovely holiday weekend. Today, I’m reviewing McCall 7438. The pattern is currently out of print, but Lindsay from Inside the Hem did a youtube review on it and I had to have it. I was able to find it on Ebay. It’s a perfect mini skirt pattern. The pattern comes with 4 views: 3 mini skirt views and one fringe skirt view. I decided to go for view C, which has a center front pleat: super cute.

Fabric Choice for McCall 7438

Total disclosure: I’ve never worked with wools or plaids, but there’s not time like the present. I also really wanted to use a wool plaid for the skirt. I’ve never matched plaids or stripes, but it was for sure time to conquer my “fear”. I was browsing at Joann Fabrics and there was a sale on wool fabrics, so I picked up a tan, gray, and white plaid wool blend fabric. I felt like Cher Horowitz with the fabric and the pattern pick. Also, just knowing wool fabrics, I used leftover lining fabric from Burda 6291. To my surprise, wool is a recommended fabric for the skirt, but there isn’t a lining requirement. If you’ve ever worn a wool sweater, you know you need a lining to stop the itchiness.

Garment Construction

McCall 7438 is quite simple in terms of pattern. There’s the front piece, the two back pieces, the waistbands, and the zipper. The most difficult part of the skirt was definitely the matching of the plaids. I just had to make sure that my notches on the front and the back were lined up on the same plaid. Knowing that I could cut the lining as in, that was a piece of cake. Once I made the skirt, I tried it on, and much like Simplicity 8701, there was too much ease. I ended up taking in an inch on both sides, so the plaids were a little wonky, but I think it worked out.

Final Thoughts

I adore this pattern. I’m already planning on making the other views, with my adjustments of course. It sews beautifully and looks even better on that I imagined. It’s a timeless skirt that I can wear through the cooler seasons with a pair of knee high boots or even over the knee boots.

Thank you so much for reading. Happy sewing!
