More Abstract with a Side of Pleats: Vogue 1783

Happy Monday everyone! Thanks so much for stopping by and reading about my latest make. I first stumbled upon Vogue 1783 over the summer. At that point, I had only been sewing a couple of months and I didn’t have the confidence to be able to make a pleated dress. I was actually looking at making the longer version for a maxi moment, but never got around to it. Then, autumn came around and I knew it was time to make it, but now in View A. My thought process was it would be great with a pair of boots.

Fabric Choice

I let the pattern guide my fabric choice. It’s suitable for sateen, so I went with an abstract hieroglyphic printed fabric from Mood Fabrics. One this about Vogue 1783 is that it requires A LOT of fabric. Originally, I had purchased 4 yards of fabric, but ended up getting another yard once I cut the pattern and realized it wasn’t enough. In any case, it was worth it. I’m absolutely obsessed with the fabric and I’m so pleased with the way it turned out.

Dress Construction

The making of this dress isn’t as intimidating as it looks. When I cut the pattern out, I was a tad nervous. Though once I started sewing, the anxiety melted away. The dress is essentially like working a muscle. The pieces are all sewn the same way. I love it because the dress looks so fancy and complex, but once you’ve sewn one pleat, the rest come together quite quickly. All in all, I really enjoyed making this. My favorite part of the dress are the sleeves. They’re simply pleated, but wow – what a way to elevate a dress! The only complaint or issue I have is with the button placket. I’m not sure if I didn’t follow the directions properly, but after turning out the placket after I cut it, the placket sits awkwardly. I’ll definitely make this dress again in the summer and report back.

Final Thoughts

If it’s not obvious from my remarks above, I love this pattern. It’s a keeper and it’ll be in my stash for years to come. Thank you for stopping by and reading. Happy sewing!
